About the Role

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., located in Human Resources within the Retirement Programs group. The role reports to the Manager, Executive Compensation & Retirement Programs and may be based at the Corporate Headquarters in Akron, Ohio, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, or Reading, Pennsylvania.

The Retirement Programs team administers the defined benefit pension (qualified and non-qualified) and 401(k) programs. This position supports business units to ensure these programs help attract and retain key and critical talent.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the administration of defined benefit pension programs, both qualified and non-qualified plan formulas.
  • Supports the administration of the 401(k) program.
  • Assists with monthly pension payroll processing and validations; knowledge of Oracle is a plus.
  • Performs various reconciliations and researches discrepancies.
  • Processes active and retiree deaths, including confirmation, updating pension option elections, identifying beneficiaries, and notifying vendors.
  • Assists with special pension-related projects such as early retirement options and pension lift-outs.
  • Compiles data for retirements (projections and actual retirements), including data requests from external financial providers.
  • Reviews divorce documentation to determine if a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) or Domestic Relations Order (DRO) is necessary.
  • Performs SOX controls to ensure data accuracy for pension calculations and valuations.
  • Works with internal and external auditors on the annual pension audit.
  • Reviews and supports calls from current and former employees regarding retirement programs, beneficiary changes, and account distributions.
  • Consults with business unit leaders on retirement program practices and processes.
  • Prepares and delivers pension-related presentations to employees.
  • Prepares ad-hoc reports and statistics for retirement programs and initiatives, including complex reporting and analysis.
  • Recommends process improvements and implements solutions to drive change across the organization.
  • Working knowledge of 401(k) administration under Fidelity is a plus.
  • Working knowledge or familiarity with Code Section 409A is a plus.

Requirements

HR Rep III Level

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with a minimum of 4 to 7 years of relevant work experience, or in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in job skills required for the role.
  • Applies conceptual knowledge to solve routine challenges and recognizes implications for unrelated business operations.
  • Exercises independent judgment on basic projects with minimal management oversight.
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging effectively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Excel (advanced skills desired), PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Proficient analytical and quantitative skills to identify challenges, gather and analyze information, and develop solutions.
  • Proficient knowledge of section operations and fundamental knowledge of department operations.
  • Strong work management skills; ability to independently organize, manage, and prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Ability to work with management and peers both inside and outside the department.
  • Ability to interface with external parties while maintaining core business objectives.
  • Understands connections between various HR areas.
  • CEBS or SHRM certification is a plus.

HR Rep IV Level

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with a minimum of 7 to 10 years of relevant work experience, or in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience.
  • Career-level individual exhibiting full competency, recommending and implementing solutions for complex issues.
  • Develops process improvements aligned with broader business objectives.
  • Manages projects with a sense of ownership and thoroughness.
  • Provides leadership on initiatives and is viewed as an informal leader to peers.
  • Performs independently with minimal oversight.
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Excel (advanced skills desired), PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Advanced analytical and quantitative skills to proactively identify complex challenges, analyze information, and develop solutions.
  • Advanced knowledge of section operations and proficient knowledge of department operations.
  • Expert organizational skills and ability to manage and prioritize multiple work assignments.
  • Ability to assume additional responsibilities and handle increased workload without compromising quality or customer service.
  • Advanced ability to work with management and peers both inside and outside the business unit; provides mentoring and onboarding.
  • Ability to develop mutually beneficial relationships and interface with external parties.
  • Effectively supports company leadership at all levels.
  • Understands connections between various HR areas.
  • CEBS or SHRM certification is a plus.
