Duties And Responsibilities
- Ensuring compliance with all train orders, railroad rules, safety regulations, operating procedures, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements.
- Following company safety procedures and maintaining a strong level of safety awareness while operating in the work environment.
- Providing and receiving various forms of oral and printed communication concerning the movement and placement of rail cars.
- Preparing necessary forms and reports.
- Observing, interpreting, and relaying communications concerning train and engine movement.
- Making effective decisions in unfamiliar or emergency situations.
- Operating track switches and derails to change engine and rail car routes.
- Operating various devices, such as uncoupling levers, to separate and couple cars.
- Applying handbrakes on rail cars and locomotives.
- Maintaining predictable and reliable attendance.
- Performing additional tasks as required by a supervisor from time to time.
Working Conditions
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Climbing on and off ladders on moving rail cars.
- Ability to walk for frequent and extended periods, sometimes on uneven surfaces.
Training
- Newly hired conductors and/or engineers will take part in several weeks of training, which includes some classroom instruction but primarily consists of field training with a crew to enhance understanding and awareness of train operations.
- The training guides the new conductor and/or engineer through the critical safety skills required when working around passenger equipment.
- Training is completed upon successful observation by Potomac Eagle’s Operations, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance Manager.
Minimum Requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- Meets all medical fitness requirements for the position.
- Valid or recently expired conductor and/or engineer card from another railroad.
