About the role
The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing cardiopulmonary care services in accordance with specific physician’s orders, department policies and procedures. They must demonstrate competency in various areas including oxygen delivery, administering respiratory therapy treatments, ventilator management, and arterial punctures.
Responsibilities
- Maintains knowledge of various methods of oxygen delivery and possible side effects.
- Administers respiratory therapy treatments and understands their purposes and side effects.
- Sets-up and monitors invasive and non-invasive ventilators, performs airway management, tracheal suctioning, and endotracheal intubation.
- Able to assess patient pain and make appropriate physician contacts for intervention.
- Performs arterial punctures for blood gas analysis and understands possible complications.
- Follows departmental equipment sterilization procedures.
- Documents all pertinent data on the patient’s medical record.
- Maintains thorough knowledge of departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks, and their proper usage.
- Performs EKGs, sends reports to physicians, and files reports according to department procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of different age groups and treatment modalities.
- Follows medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
- Supports patient safety and follows hospital policy.
- Manages and operates equipment safely, inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment.
- Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates its effectiveness.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
- Coordinates and directs patient care to meet their needs and follow hospital policy.
- Assesses patient needs, ability to tolerate treatment, and reassesses for response to treatment.
- Attends education inservice programs and obtains appropriate hospital-specific education and training.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the department manager.
Requirements
- Current State Respiratory Therapist Licensure.
- Graduate of an AMA-approved School of Respiratory Therapy.
- Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation certification.
- Current ACLS certification.
- Three (3) or more years of previous experience in cardiopulmonary services, preferred.
Qualifications
- Adheres to dress code and maintains patient confidentiality.
- Reports to work on time and completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty and uses computerized punch time system correctly.
- Completes inservices and attends departmental meetings as scheduled.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility and department.
Skills
- Basic computer knowledge.
Physical Demands
- Normal hospital environment.
- Normal/corrected eyesight and hearing within normal range.
- Frequent sitting and walking.
- Lifts up to 100 pounds, carries up to 50 pounds, pushes/pulls up to 100 pounds, and assists with codes.
