Position Purpose

Performs technical procedures related to the treatment of patients with Cardiopulmonary disorders, including the assembly of equipment and administration of respiratory medications, under the direct supervision of a Respiratory Therapist.

What the Respiratory Therapy Extern Will Do

  • Cleans, assembles, and maintains all Respiratory Care Department equipment within scope of practice.
  • Utilizes supplies and resources in a cost-effective manner.
  • Under general supervision by a Respiratory Therapist, perform tasks according to policy and standard procedures.
  • Makes patient response to therapy and provides timely, accurate documentation in electronic medical records.
  • Treatments include administration of nasal oxygen, nebulized medication treatments, tracheostomy care, and Pulmonary Hygiene therapy (e.g.; Acapella, Thera-Pep, etc.), ECGs, to patients as prescribed by a physician.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED; or current student in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program and/or college level courses.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Successful graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program is expected within 18 months of hire.
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) is expected within 6 months following graduation.
