Position Purpose
Performs technical procedures related to the treatment of patients with Cardiopulmonary disorders, including the assembly of equipment and administration of respiratory medications, under the direct supervision of a Respiratory Therapist.
What the Respiratory Therapy Extern Will Do
- Cleans, assembles, and maintains all Respiratory Care Department equipment within scope of practice.
- Utilizes supplies and resources in a cost-effective manner.
- Under general supervision by a Respiratory Therapist, perform tasks according to policy and standard procedures.
- Maintains patient response to therapy and provides timely, accurate documentation in electronic medical records.
- Therapies include administration of nasal oxygen, nebulized medication treatments, tracheostomy care, and Pulmonary Hygiene therapy (e.g.; Acapella, Thera-Pep, etc.), ECGs, to patients as prescribed by a physician.
- (Note: For Respiratory Therapy Student Tech’s only, who have accomplished the theory and clinical module in P&PD, ABG puncture with analyzation, and/or non-invasive ventilation such as BIPAP/CPAP successfully in school and have completed a THMU RC competency. Will establish and maintain applicable Respiratory Care competencies.)
- Accurately completes Electronic Health Record documentation per department standards; and maintains the Order Entry and Charging system for services rendered.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED; or current student in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program and/or college level courses.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
- Successful graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program is expected within 18 months of hire.
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) is expected within 6 months following graduation.
