Job Summary

Provides advanced evaluation, stabilization, and critical care management for patients aged 0-17 years old, including the extremely preterm infant, requiring transport between facilities.

Essential Functions

  • Performs detailed physical assessment, establishes a plan of care and performs advanced critical care stabilization for patients being transported following designated protocols and procedures to include all advanced respiratory therapy as approved by the Program’s Medical Control Physicians and SC DPH Division of EMS.
  • Exhibits effective communication and intentional compassion, ensuring professional bedside interactions with patients and families, referring physicians, outlying facilities, and EMS support personnel.
  • Independently manages both advanced invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
  • Collects data to assist in regulatory compliance, quality improvement and patient satisfaction issues.
  • Performs various specialty skills to include, but not limited to endotracheal intubation, blood gas sampling from capillary, venous, and arterial sites, umbilical venous insertion, and needle decompression.
  • Ability to perform duties on all transport modalities to include rotor-wing, fixed-wing, or ground ambulance.
  • Makes recommendations to medical directors during transport as appropriate. Accurately and completely documents patient care via electronic software.
  • Demonstrates responsible stewardship of organizational resources, including supplies, time, and productivity, and performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy. Graduate of a school for Respiratory Therapy approved by the American Medical Association or a successor accrediting authority.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of inpatient and/or ED experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least two (2) years of Level III NICU and PICU experience. In Lieu Of NA Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses: Licensed to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the state the team member is working. RRT from NBRC (credentials must be maintained). BLS, ACLS, NRP, STABLE and PALS. Advanced specialty certification within two (2) years of hire. A valid driver’s license; an acceptable motor vehicle record, as defined by the Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Chart.
  • Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: Knowledge and experience with various ventilators including the High Frequency Oscillator Ventilator (HFOV), Jet Ventilator, TXP, and Nitric delivery systems.
