About the Role
Acts as an active member of the patient care team to provide clinical patient care assessment, initiation, modification, and discontinuance of therapeutic respiratory care procedures to critically ill patients. Analyzes and evaluates clinical patient data to determine the appropriate therapy or interventions and makes recommendations on patient care plans to the medical staff.
Responsibilities
- Initiates and/or assists with appropriate respiratory tests and procedures, as ordered, to deliver appropriate care to patients
- Responds to respiratory emergencies and transports mechanically ventilated patients when moved from units for tests and procedures
- Schedules patient treatments as necessary and provides consultation as an active member of the patient care team
- Manages the administration of all aspects of respiratory therapy according to respiratory care policies and procedures
- Makes regular bedside rounds and administers Respiratory Care modalities to assigned patients. Modifies treatment care plan according to clinical picture and response to therapy
- Participates in education of students, physicians, staff, and patients/families. Clinically supervises respiratory therapy students in the patient areas
Qualifications
- Education: Associate's Degree Respiratory Therapy required and Bachelor's Degree Respiratory Therapy preferred
- Licenses and Credentials: Basic Life Support [BLS Certification], Registered Respiratory Therapist [RRT], Neonatal Resuscitation Certification [NRP]
- Experience: Respiratory Care 0-1 year preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to be a subject matter expert in the area of Respiratory Therapy and be able to communicate effectively with patients, team members, and other healthcare disciplines
- Ability to assess quickly and offer professional judgment to prepare appropriate care plan, and makes specific recommendations to physician for indicated therapy
- Strong communication Skills
- Ability to walk distances and push medical equipment weighing less than 100 pounds. May also be required to stand immobile for long periods of time
