Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) - Night Shift

0.9 FTE part-time night shift (12-hour) position located at 500 Pasteur Dr, Palo Alto, California. This is an entry-level role within Stanford Health Care.

About the Role

Perform diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice, in accordance with physician orders or protocols. Duties are performed in adult patient populations.

Responsibilities

• Administration of aerosolized medications via handheld nebulizers (HHN), metered dose inhalers (MDI), dry powder inhalers (DPI), large volume continuous nebulizers, and intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV).
• Administration of medical gases via nasal cannulas, oxygen masks, high flow nasal cannulas, and large volume nebulizers.
• Performing routine tracheostomy care, weaning, and downsizing.
• Assembling and assuring safety and proper functioning of all equipment/supplies necessary for providing respiratory care.
• Documentation of results, findings, and assessments in the patient’s electronic medical record.
• Performing airway clearance using chest physiotherapy (CPT), vibratory positive expiratory pressure devices, cough assist device, or nasotracheal suctioning.
• Assessing pulmonary mechanics using portable spirometry devices.
• Responding to cardiopulmonary arrests and rapid response calls.
• Responding to calls and providing therapy to patients requiring emergency care for non-traumatic conditions.
• Educating patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other members of the health care team about routine respiratory procedures, medications, modalities, and disease processes.
• Providing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or biphasic positive airway pressure (BiPAP) for patients who require ventilatory support.
• Providing invasive ventilation for medically stable patients who use such devices at home.
• Performing arterial blood gas sampling and analysis.
• Overseeing and training staff and community college students working on general medical floors.

Qualifications

Education

• American Medical Association (AMA) approved respiratory care program with receipt of an associate level degree (bachelor’s degree preferred).

Experience

• No previous respiratory care experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver.
• Ability to think critically, conduct analysis, formulate conclusions, and reflect on practice.
• Ability to process equipment and utilize personal protective equipment to reduce risk of infection.
• Understanding of commonly used medical terminology.
• Knowledge of new technologies, changes in practice, or updates relating to respiratory care.
• Knowledge of the principles of health, hospital, and clinic organization and administration.
• Knowledge of the indications, contraindications, and hazards of respiratory therapies, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology related to the cardiopulmonary system.
• Ability to provide superior customer service along with quality respiratory care to positively impact patient experience and outcomes.

Licenses and Certifications

• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RTT) required, with advanced credentialing preferred (e.g., RRT-ACCS, RRT-NPS, CPFT, RPFT).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
• Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in California required.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

• Blood Borne Pathogens Category I – Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

Pay

Generally starting at $61.34 - $69.10 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

Schedule

Night shift, 12-hour schedule (0.9 FTE part-time).
