About the role
The Residential Aide (RA) provides direct assistance, support, and care to clients residing in the shelter at our Poplar location in Bronx, NY. Under the general direction of the Shift Supervisor, the RA ensures the continued support and well-being of clients while enforcing facility rules.
Responsibilities
- Complete new resident intake arrival packets, exit logs, and daily occupancy forms
- Utilize the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Client Assistance and Rehousing Enterprise Systems (CARES) to complete intake check-ins and discharge conditional intakes
- Review the nightly attendance roster and incident reports
- Receive food deliveries, confirm items received, and report inconsistencies to the Shift Supervisor and Program Director
- Distribute meals to residents and dispose of expired food items as outlined by DHS Food Distribution Guidelines
- Monitor logs to ensure clients sign the daily attendance roster when entering and exiting the facility
- Provide clients access to rooms and assist in room transfers/swaps
- Collect and dispose of trash in designated areas
- Distribute DHS notices (4002 notices, appointment slips, mail, etc.) to residents
- Adhere to DHS housekeeping mandates by cleaning office spaces, microwaves, refrigerators, and bathrooms at the end of every shift
- Bag and tag client personal belongings when necessary and report room cleaning and repair needs to the Shift Supervisor
- Collaborate with the on-site Shift Supervisor to ensure a safe environment for all staff and clients
- Conduct hourly rounds of the facility to ensure room doors and clients’ personal belongings are secured
- Conduct safety checks of clients staying in the facility due to illness, mobility issues, etc.
- Immediately alert medical staff and immediate supervisor of any clients found in distress
- Rotate shifts at the discretion of the DPO to meet program needs
- Conduct operational unit inspections during the new intake process
- Maintain and submit all logs (attendance, ACS, emergency contacts, sign-in/out logbook) on the 1st of every month to the Director of Operations
- Create a dead file of all logs on the 1st of every month for storage
- Adhere to the dress code policy for uniformed personnel and maintain a professional appearance
- Review all paperwork and logs completed during the previous shift with the Shift Supervisor before the end of the tour
- Physically check all unoccupied rooms to determine readiness, repairs, and cleanings
- Ensure all clean and ready units have clean linens and towels; alert the maintenance team of any needed items
- Complete and submit all paperwork (daily occupancy, exit logs, meal census, NSR, new intake, curfew violations, incidents, etc.)
- Serve meals: breakfast (8:00 AM–10:00 AM), lunch (12:00 PM–2:00 PM), and dinner (6:00 PM–8:00 PM)
- Finalize Night Signature Roster (NSR) in CARES
- Ensure new logs for the month are in place
- Receive and log incoming meals, usually at 6:00 AM
- Deliver mail during the 8:00 AM–4:00 PM shift
- Clock in using the time clock system and sign in via the onsite logbook
- Be available for overtime when necessary
- Work additional shifts to ensure coverage when staff is out of the office
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid NYS security license (must maintain)
- At least two years of experience in Single Adult Shelters and/or Congregate Residential Services
- Experience working with families or the homeless population
- Food Protection certification and CPR/First Aid certification
- Must complete a satisfactory background investigation
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as organizational skills
- Ability to work well under pressure, independently, and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Intermediate computer skills with proficiency in Word and Excel, and the ability to learn new technologies and databases
Physical Demands
- May be required to work long hours and a varied schedule to meet job demands and deadlines
- Periodically may bend, lift, and carry objects weighing up to seventy-five pounds
