Primary Responsibilities
The Resident Engineer (RE) will perform the duties with a team of Construction Engineers, Caltrans / Owner Inspectors, Materials Testers, Consultants, and Office Personnel. These duties change through the course of the job while giving instructions to Prime Construction Contractors as many tasks and completes many items of work on the Construction project. These construction activities are covered by complex specifications, and the RE must interpret and enforce the Contract requirements to ensure compliance with the Contract. The Resident Engineer has a primary role of administrating the Construction Project contract and when required, obtain approval from the Caltrans Senior Transportation Engineer. The Resident Engineer coordinates with Caltrans Inspectors to determine appropriate priorities for testing and inspection of work quality based on contractor-proposed order of work for the shift.
This is a part-time, temporary position.
Preferred Qualifications
- California Professional Engineer (Civil) License
- 10 years of relevant experience with Caltrans Highway Construction / Improvements projects
- Able to be flexible and working days, nights, and/or weekends in heavy construction requiring walking, bending, lifting and carrying inspection / surveying tools and equipment’s at elevated heights, confined spaces, extreme weather conditions, remote work sites, environmentally sensitive areas and over water-ways, if needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or closely related field
- 10 years related experience in various aspects of construction including estimating, bidding, preparing purchase orders and subcontracts, scheduling, and field engineering
- Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered.

Expected Compensation Range
The expected compensation range for this position is $63.50 - $94.75 hourly depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
