Reserving Actuary
About the Role
Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, Workers Compensation Division, seeks a Reserving Actuary to manage and direct the work of the reserving team. This individual will oversee quarterly loss and loss adjustment expense reserve analysis and provide data for external financial reporting. The position involves conducting research on key loss reserve drivers and presenting findings to senior leadership.
Responsibilities
- Manages and directs the work of the reserving team, including keeping everyone on task to complete recurring assignments within tight timeframes.
- Turns data into critical information and knowledge that can be utilized to determine organizational decisions.
- Presents findings to senior leadership.
- Selects actuarial assumptions and methods based on all available sources of data, reviews alternative assumptions, and is prepared to explain and defend assumptions upon review by peers, senior leaders, and non-actuaries.
- Develops and maintains analytical standards and procedures, including peer reviews, to ensure consistency of analysis, execution, knowledge sharing, and documentation.
- Maintains awareness of legislative and regulatory activity and incorporates its effects into actuarial analyses.
- Engages with and participates in industry professional organizations and rating committees, representing the company's strategic interests while presenting as an expert thought leader within the professional community.
- Prepares and presents ad-hoc research and reporting.
Qualifications
- Required: Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Risk Management, Data Science, or other quantitative field; minimum of seven (7) years of relevant FCAS experience with insurance industry concepts and applications; experience working with Willis Towers Watson ResQ preferred.
- Technical Skills: Sound data analytical skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, MS-Access, MS-SQL); knowledge of workers compensation standards and best practices preferred.
