Research Technician
About the role
The Pickrell laboratory in conjunction with the Morton laboratory in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech is seeking a laboratory technician with strong organizational and independent research oversight skills. This position involves managing laboratory stocks, databases, and supplies, as well as assisting with various research projects.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and independently manage research activities within the laboratories
- Assist group members with their projects
- Maintain laboratory stocks, databases, and inventory of laboratory supplies
- Organize and manage the general operations of the laboratory
- Author or co-author publications based on research conducted
- Develop and pursue related research projects based on personal interest and background
- Receive training and guidance for areas where expertise may be lacking
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related field
- At least 1 year of hands-on experience in molecular biology (including DNA and RNA handling)
- Ability to independently perform PCR and qPCR
- Time management, data organization, and record keeping skills
- Proficiency in using computer software
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Excellent communication skills
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for science
- Willingness to work with mice to organize and maintain the mouse colony
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous laboratory experience in a biomedical research setting
- Knowledge and experience in cell and molecular biology and neuroscience
- Understanding of standard laboratory equipment and techniques
- Experience with confocal microscopy and analyses
Pay and Benefits
Salary range: $42,000 - $46,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications
Overtime eligible
