Research Technician
This position is an on-site role primarily at Northern Arizona University sites, campuses, or facilities with rare opportunities for remote work. It is subject to the availability of funding. Driving a university vehicle is a regular part of this position, requiring compliance with Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy, including driver authorization, record monitoring, and training.
The role is based in the School of Earth & Sustainability, with work conducted in Flagstaff, AZ, and Grand Canyon National Park. The position involves physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough terrain, recurring bending or lifting of items under 50 pounds, and exposure to moderate risks or discomforts, including adverse weather, limited access field sites, or hazardous chemicals. Special clothing or gear may be required.
About the Role
This position supports a cooperative project between Northern Arizona University (NAU) and the National Park Service (NPS) focused on water sources and quality in Grand Canyon National Park. The work involves collaboration with NPS hydrologists and geologists, with substantial office time at NPS facilities in Flagstaff and frequent field trips into the park. Field trips average 4 days but can extend up to 14 days (rare) and include work in springs, streams, caves, slot canyons, and arid lands. The role requires backcountry travel, long hours, and weekend work.
The project aims to improve understanding of water quantity, quality, and vulnerability in Grand Canyon National Park, particularly for the park’s water supply (Roaring Springs and Bright Angel Creek). Research will assess the surface area on the Kaibab Plateau draining through springs associated with these water sources. Additionally, the project addresses threats to drinking water from the Dragon Bravo fire on the North Rim and gathers data on previously understudied groundwater systems in the region. Findings will help the park evaluate water supply availability and vulnerability to contamination, especially in the context of climate change.
Responsibilities
- Field Data Collection & Monitoring (10%)
- Collect hydrologic data in the field and lab, including stream discharge, sediment, and groundwater/surface water survey data using established procedures.
- Measure water quality parameters and collect water samples for various projects.
- Assess geomorphologic and hydraulic characteristics at spring, stream, and cave sites.
- Use judgment to troubleshoot and adjust data collection methods as needed.
- Field Operations & Equipment Management (10%)
- Operate, adjust, maintain, and inventory surveying and hydrologic sampling equipment.
- Plan multi-day field trips into wilderness areas in consultation with NPS specialists, utilizing permits, backcountry routing forms, and route information.
- Build, maintain, and operate remote stream gauges with limited or no outside assistance.
- Equipment & Supply Administration (10%)
- Purchase new scientific equipment and field supplies based on current and anticipated needs.
- Manage team equipment supplies and distribute necessary gear to individuals.
