Research Subject

This position supports the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) Aerospace Medical Research Division’s Cabin Safety Team. The research subject will participate in a study evaluating the efficiency and safety of methods for evacuating seated or wheelchair-bound disabled passengers from a simulated aircraft cabin, following specified research protocols.

Responsibilities

• Represent the flying public—individuals who would reasonably be expected to utilize air travel and benefit from this research.
• Understand and follow directions presented in written and spoken English.
• Participate in mild warm-up exercises and stretching (hamstrings, lower back, shoulders, quadriceps) before and during the session, completing up to nine trials, while staying limber throughout.
• Allow the FAA access to any medical records generated during or after participation in the experiments.
• Avoid bringing unnecessary personal belongings to evacuation sessions.
• Perform tasks classified as "Very Heavy Work" by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, including occasionally lifting or carrying over 100 lbs.
• Provide accurate personal information (e.g., age, education level, flying experience) and allow anthropomorphic measurements (e.g., height, weight, girth, seated back-to-knee length) for research purposes.
• Wear appropriate clothing: long sleeves, long pants, no low-cut/mid-drift/halter tops, and no dangling jewelry.
• Wear flat, closed-toe, low-heeled shoes (e.g., tennis shoes) that remain securely fastened during experiments. Sandals, flip-flops, Crocs, and high heels are not permitted.
• Participate in rapid simulated aircraft egress without endangering themselves or others.

Requirements

• Ability to obtain, maintain, and access classified information at the client level.
• Must be 18–60 years of age.
• No medical conditions or physical limitations that would preclude participation in "Very Heavy Work" (e.g., lifting >100 lbs).
• Must not have disqualifying conditions, including:
  • Respiratory ailments (e.g., asthma, emphysema).
  • Pregnancy.
  • Blood pressure problems or diagnosed heart conditions.
  • Chest pains, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness.
  • Serious bodily disability, deformity, or dismemberment.
  • Diabetes requiring medication.
  • Claustrophobia.
  • Recent surgery or chronic disease.
• Must not be taking medications or drugs that impair physical/cognitive activity or preclude operating heavy machinery/driving.
• Must not be under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol during participation.
• No active workers' compensation or disability claims.
• High school diploma or GED.
• No prior experience or training required.
