About the Role

The Research Specialist will extract metabolites from a variety of biological matrices, perform targeted and untargeted LC/MS metabolomics assays, and carry out data analysis requiring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Responsibilities vary by level:

  • Research Specialist B: Assists the Director with establishing new metabolomics assays, instrument maintenance, ordering chemicals and supplies, and maintaining laboratory safety.
  • Research Specialist C: In addition to B-level duties, independently develops new methods with minimal oversight and assists the Core Director with project management.
  • Research Specialist D: In addition to C-level duties, assists the Director with overall lab operation, provides training and supervision of lab technicians, undergraduate and graduate students, contributes to journal submissions, participates in meetings with research professors to design experiments, and independently develops new assays.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of biological fluids and tissues for LC/MS metabolomics experiments.
  • Targeted and untargeted LC/MS metabolomics analysis of biological extracts.
  • Analysis of LC/MS metabolomics data and generation of reports.
  • Ordering supplies and maintaining lab organization.
  • Lab maintenance and safety.
  • Establishing new metabolomics assays (Specialist C and D).
  • Project management (Specialist C and D).
  • Training and supervising lab technicians, undergraduate and graduate students, and post-docs (Specialist D).
  • Participating in meetings with research professors to design experiments, review data, and contribute to manuscripts (Specialist D).
  • Independently developing new metabolomics methods and improving existing methods (Specialist D).

Qualifications

  • Research Specialist B: Bachelor of Science and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Research Specialist C: Bachelor of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Research Specialist D: Master of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Location

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

Pay

Salary offers range from $50,875.00 to $82,000.00 annually, based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the position. Market data and internal peer comparisons are also considered.
