Research Scientist/Associate
About the role
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia is seeking a Research Scientist/Research Associate to study the intervertebral disc degeneration, focusing on the roles of neuronal and immune systems. The goal is to identify effective therapies for treating back pain, which is a leading cause of disability.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research on the intervertebral disc degeneration, focusing on the interaction between neuronal and immune systems.
- Develop and execute molecular and cellular techniques such as cell culture, in vitro assays, animal handling, flow cytometry, and histological analysis.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design and implement experiments aimed at understanding the pathogenesis of intervertebral disc degeneration and developing potential therapeutics.
- Communicate findings effectively through reports, presentations, and publications.
- Use computer programs for data compilation and evaluation, and demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Requirements
- A minimum of a Bachelors degree or MD/PhD in cell and molecular biology-related fields.
- Experience in molecular biology, cell culture, in vitro assays, and histological studies.
- Effective spoken and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer programs for data compilation and evaluation and advanced Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Prior experience in animal surgery is preferred.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or MD/PhD in molecular biology and bioengineering-related fields.
- Experience in molecular biology.
- Background in cell culture, in vitro assays, and histological studies.
- Effective spoken and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer programs for data compilation and evaluation and advanced Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Prior experience in animal surgery is preferred.
Skills
- Strong background in immunology is highly desirable.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Benefits
This is a restricted position contingent upon the continued availability of funding. The successful candidate will receive a one-year appointment. The appointment is renewable in one-year increments up to three years with the possibility of extension for two additional years.
Pay
$55,000 - $72,000
Schedule
The position is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings and programs.
