Research Science Officer

About the Role

This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

Responsibilities

• Provide scientific leadership and expert oversight for occupational respiratory disease research by reviewing and approving research proposals, manuscripts, technical reports, and other scientific products, ensuring scientific quality, accuracy, and program impact.
• Ensure the Division's occupational respiratory research and service programs comply with applicable federal laws, regulations, policies, and scientific standards while providing authoritative consultation on complex occupational respiratory disease issues to senior leadership and stakeholders.
• Lead strategic planning efforts by establishing long-range research priorities, identifying strategic and tactical initiatives, and aligning scientific programs with organizational goals to advance occupational respiratory health.
• Supervise and develop a multidisciplinary workforce while participating in the administration of divisional operations, including budget, personnel, information technology, and other operational functions to support effective program management and mission accomplishment.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications

You must possess a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Minimum Qualifications

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service performing all of the following duties:

• Providing scientific leadership and oversight for occupational respiratory disease research.
• Ensuring compliance with federal laws, regulations, and scientific standards in research programs.
• Leading strategic planning and aligning scientific programs with organizational goals.
• Supervising a multidisciplinary workforce and managing divisional operations.

Qualifications

Qualifications are based on breadth and level of experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through national service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. If such experience is on a part-time basis, provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience.

Federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties appropriate for their official series and grade level. Experience outside of these duties is creditable if documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the supervisor or an SF-50/SF-52 documenting an official detail or assignment.
