Position Summary

The Research Ophthalmic Technician is primarily responsible for performing ophthalmology tasks in accordance with study protocols, sponsor requirements, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. The ideal candidate has experience performing a wide variety of ophthalmology tasks and has an interest in a long-term career within clinical research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform high-quality OCT imaging according to study-specific protocols.
  • Prepare participants for ophthalmic imaging procedures.
  • Ensure all imaging meets sponsor quality standards prior to participant departure.
  • Upload, label, and maintain imaging files in accordance with study requirements.
  • Maintain and calibrate ophthalmology equipment.
  • Administer ophthalmic solutions such as artificial tears, dilating solutions, and prescriptions.
  • Auxiliary investigators and clinical research staff during participant visits.
  • Accurately document procedures and maintain source documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with protocol requirements, GCP, HIPAA, and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Communicate effectively with Clinical Research Coordinators regarding participant flow and scheduling.
  • Participate in sponsor training as required.

Skills/Abilities

  • Strong attention to detail and image quality.
  • Excellent interpersonal and patient communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1+ years as an Ophthalmic Technician, Ophthalmic Assistant, or Ophthalmic Photographer.
  • Experience performing Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), fundus photography, electroretinography, IOP measurements, Amsler grids, visual field testing, corneal topography, etc.
  • Previous experience in clinical research preferred.
