Research Microbiology Technician

About the role

We are looking for a Research Microbiology Technician in Gainesville, FL. Your mission will be to support laboratory operations by preparing and analyzing samples, maintaining equipment, and ensuring accurate results.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare samples for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending
  • Label plates with client and sample identification for tracking
  • Pipette sample solutions into tubes or plates according to analysis processes
  • Pour agar into plates or tubes to initiate growth processes
  • Collect plates and incubate them at specified times and temperatures
  • Prepare media and broth for pathogen testing as required
  • Ensure media and materials are ready for subsequent testing sequences
  • Maintain knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for job responsibilities
  • Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis
  • Read plates and tubes to determine organism concentrations in samples
  • Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes
  • Perform housekeeping duties, keeping work areas and equipment clean and sanitized
  • Participate in cleaning schedules and maintain retain samples as required
  • Adhere to all safety policies and support laboratory management in implementing and improving the management system
  • Perform other related tasks as needed

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience and 1+ year of relevant work
  • Basic knowledge of science to perform testing procedures accurately
  • Basic knowledge of personal computers for data entry
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies
  • Planning skills to maintain supplies and meet analysis deadlines

  • Time management and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Analytical skills for completing analysis procedures and determining microorganism concentrations
  • General knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Physical dexterity for manipulating samples

Work Environment

The role is based in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials may occur. Safety equipment such as gloves, laboratory coats, and eyeglasses may be required depending on the testing process. Daily use of an autoclave may be necessary. The role involves:

  • Continuous lifting of materials weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Extended periods of standing
  • Ability to detect slight variations in shades of colors
