About the role
The Microbiology Laboratory Research Technician is a full-time, on-site position based in Raleigh, NC. The technician will perform routine and specialized microbiology experiments, including culturing microorganisms, preparing media and reagents, and maintaining sterile techniques.
Responsibilities
- Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment
- Assisting with sample collection and processing
- Managing inventories
- Documenting experimental procedures and results
- Supporting ongoing research projects through data entry, basic analysis, and preparation of figures or summaries under the guidance of senior lab members
- Helping ensure compliance with safety protocols
- Participating in lab meetings
- Contributing to a collaborative and organized lab environment
Qualifications
- Strong microbiology and research skills, including experience with microbial culture, aseptic technique, and experimental design
- Demonstrated laboratory skills, including preparation of media and solutions, handling biological samples, and adherence to safety and quality standards
- Ability to work with common laboratory equipment, such as incubators, autoclaves, biosafety cabinets, microscopes, and basic molecular tools
- Solid analytical skills, including accurate data recording, basic data analysis, and interpretation of experimental results
- Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, or a related life science field, or equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience
- Effective communication and organizational skills, with the ability to follow protocols, manage time, and work both independently and as part of a team
- Commitment to laboratory safety, ethical research practices, and continuous learning of new techniques and methodologies
Preferred qualifications
- Gene cloning for heterologous protein expression, protein purification, and enzyme assays
- Operation of analytical HPLC and high-resolution, accurate-mass mass spectrometry systems for proteomics research, including instruments such as Thermo Exploris or Astral
- Proteomics data analysis and basic Linux command-line skills for running bioinformatics tools
- Fluorescence in situ hybridization, advanced microscopy, or related imaging techniques
- Field research and/or ultracentrifugation using density gradients for subcellular fractionation
