About the role
The Research Lab Support Tech performs technical laboratory support services required by the department or specific protocols. This position will clean and autoclave glassware or other laboratory equipment, prepare media, maintain and distribute inventory of lab supplies, perform animal husbandry, and conduct equipment cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs. The role also oversees equipment and facility maintenance and repairs, monitors progress of construction projects, assists with lab moves and reorganizations, troubleshoots problems, and implements safety programs.
Responsibilities
- Perform research support services including cleaning and autoclaving equipment, maintaining supply inventories, animal husbandry, care of animals, and equipment maintenance.
- Clean and decontaminate research areas.
- Troubleshoot problems and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) to handle issues such as equipment failures, animal health issues, and facility issues.
- Contact appropriate services for assistance, document and report issues to supervisor or service provider.
- Monitor facility for safety, environmental, or physical problems and take necessary action to report and/or resolve problems in coordination with building management.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of lab supplies, order and distribute supplies.
- Ensure correct disposal of laboratory waste per regulatory agencies and department safety protocols.
- Maintain required documentation of work performed as instructed by supervisor or SOP.
- Help develop SOPs.
- Plan and assist laboratory or administrative staff with special projects as needed, such as relocating equipment, setting up for special events, or preparing shipments.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Experience: 3 years of relevant experience
Skills
- Knowledge of operation of basic laboratory equipment
- Knowledge of chemical, biological, and radiation safety
- Knowledge of animal husbandry and handling procedures (a plus)
- Ability to use computer systems
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office systems
