The Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy is an independent think tank conducting legal research aimed at improving laws and governance for the public good. Vidhi works with Ministries of the Government of India, State Governments, and other public institutions, providing research and drafting support at various stages of law-making. The organisation also conducts and disseminates independent research in areas of legal reform that it considers important to India’s future.
About Vidhi Bengal
Vidhi Bengal is the newest state office of the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy and is scheduled to commence operations in August 2026. It will work directly with the State Government of West Bengal on legislation and policy while also producing independent legal research on issues relevant to the state.
About the role
The Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy is hiring one Research Fellow for Vidhi Bengal. The role combines engaged work with the State Government and independent legal and policy research. As the Research Fellow will join the office at the outset of its operations, the selected candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to building the new practice while working closely with the Lead of Vidhi Bengal.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in law.
- 0–2 years of relevant work experience in public policy, litigation, or law firms. Candidates with relevant internship experience are also encouraged to apply.
- Excellent legal research and drafting skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Organised, detail-oriented, and reliable in meeting deadlines.
Responsibilities
- Draft primary and subordinate legislation on subjects within the State’s competence under the Constitution of India.
- Attend and present at meetings, consultations, and briefings with government officials and other stakeholders.
- Produce high-quality reports, research notes, briefs, and position papers.
- Write op-eds, articles, and blogs.
- Produce podcasts and videos to disseminate research and related work to a wider audience.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in law or public policy is desirable.
- Experience interacting with government officials, civil society groups, and similar stakeholders is preferred.
- A track record of publications in journals, blogs, or newspapers is desirable.
- Familiarity with graphic design is preferred.
- Fluency in spoken and written Bengali will be strongly preferred.
