Salary range: $8,392.00 - $10,505.00 per month. Effective July 1, 2025, a temporary pay reduction applies under the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025; details at CalHR’s PLP page. New hires start at the minimum salary.

About the role

Under general direction of the Program Manager, the Research Data Specialist III serves as the principal technical resource performing and leading complex data analyses related to natural and man-made hazards, utility resilience, emergency management, and cybersecurity. The role informs the Commission’s decisions, procedures, and processes by determining scope and parameters of data taxonomy, data dictionary, research criteria, and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS).

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform complex data analyses on natural and man-made hazards and utility resilience in the context of emergency management and cybersecurity.
  • Define data taxonomy, data dictionary, research criteria, and other elements of data collection and analysis, including GIS systems.
  • Present results of data analysis to internal groups and the public.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for the classification (see examination bulletin for details).
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) addressing:
    • Experience using statistical methods to analyze data related to utilities, emergency management, public safety, or public health.
    • Experience presenting results of data analysis to the public or internal groups.
    SOQ must be in 11-point Arial font, single-spaced, and no more than two pages.
  • Completed State Examination/Employment Application (STD 678) with full details of experience, education, and supervisor contacts.
