About the role

Under the general supervision of the Chief, Budget Monitoring and Management Branch, the Research Data Analyst II (RDA II) is responsible for gathering, compiling, editing, and interpreting quantitative financial data for the Department in the development of Program allocations, Budget Change Proposals, and Legislative analysis. The incumbent acts as an authority in legislative processes related to monitoring and managing program resources and budget-related schedules required by the Department of Finance. Responsibilities include creating, maintaining, and updating budget dashboards, coordinating research with other analysts for budget analysis, and serving as a lead analyst for the unit, potentially assisting in training other analysts.

Responsibilities

  • Gather, compile, edit, and interpret quantitative financial data for Program allocations, Budget Change Proposals, and Legislative analysis.
  • Act as an authority in legislative processes related to monitoring and managing program resources and budget schedules.
  • Create, maintain, and update budget dashboards for the Department.
  • Coordinate research with other analysts for budget analysis as needed.
  • Serve as a lead analyst for the unit and assist in training other analysts.

Requirements

  • Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If basing eligibility on education, include unofficial transcript(s)/diploma for verification.
  • Applicants with foreign transcripts/degrees must provide a U.S. equivalency evaluation report from a NACES or AICE approved agency.
  • Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Research Data Analyst II exam. New-to-state candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range.

Qualifications

Candidates must address the following in a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) (typed, no more than two pages, 12-point Arial font):

  • Describe a time you researched or evaluated a problem and made a recommendation. Explain the process used for analyzing the problem, your recommendation, and the outcome.
  • Describe your experience creating and updating data visualizations. Explain the process used to make the data usable, the steps taken, and the final outcome.

Pay

  • Research Data Analyst II: $6,647.00 - $8,325.00 per month (new-to-state candidates hired at minimum salary).
  • Research Data Analyst I (will consider):
    • Range A: $4,469.00 - $5,079.00 per month
    • Range B: $4,611.00 - $5,495.00 per month
    • Range C: $5,529.00 - $6,922.00 per month

Schedule

  • Permanent, full-time position.
  • Hybrid telework schedule at the discretion of the Department, with in-person attendance required as needed for operational needs.
  • Business travel may be required; reimbursement is subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contracts.
