The Beirne Carter Center for Immunology Research (CIC) at the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine is a vibrant, collaborative community of immunologists studying immune mechanisms in various contexts.

About the role

The CIC seeks a Research Associate to perform sophisticated experimental research in immune regulation of lung injury, recovery, and chronic disease development following infection. The successful candidate will participate in multiple lab projects, contribute to study reports for sponsors, papers, and grant applications, and develop research programs as time permits. The role involves collaborating with graduate students, technicians, fellows, and other researchers, as well as attending laboratory meetings and CIC-related seminars.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct full-time research and/or scholarship in preparation for an academic or research career.
  • Work under the supervision of a senior scholar, with opportunities to publish research results.
  • Demonstrate strong time management and communication skills.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Assist with laboratory maintenance and upkeep, as applicable.
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Highly motivated to develop new research avenues.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Intensive experience in small animal procedures, flow cytometry, molecular biology, and immune cell purification and culture.
  • Experience in molecular biology, microscopy, cellular immunology, T cell biology, lung biology, murine models of disease, and human samples is preferred.
  • Terminal degree (PhD or equivalent) in Immunology, Virology, Lung Biology, or a related field at the time of hire.
  • Candidates must have received or will receive their terminal degree between 2023 and 2026.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary role involving extensive desktop computer use. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings and programs.

This is a restricted, exempt-level, benefited position contingent on funding availability. The role is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site. Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted for all new hires. This position does not consider candidates requiring immigration sponsorship now or in the future.
