About the role

The Research Associate Sr serves as an independent researcher or a collaborator on a multi-scholar research initiative, and may have lead responsibility for discrete components of a larger project.

Candidates must possess hands-on experience with large animal surgical instrumentation under general anesthesia and must be capable of becoming a lead surgeon in collaboration with a multidisciplinary research team. Required competencies include anesthesia induction and maintenance, endotracheal intubation, and management of animals on mechanical ventilation. The position requires proficiency in maintaining a sterile surgical field and the ability to independently perform various arterial and venous catheter placements as well as vascular flow probe implantations. Experience must encompass both acute and chronic instrumentation protocols.

In addition to performing surgical procedures, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to effectively instruct and mentor research team members in surgical techniques, anesthesia management, and perioperative animal care, fostering a collaborative and educationally supportive laboratory environment. The candidate must work with precision and composure in a surgical setting while adhering to all applicable IACUC regulations and Principal Investigator protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Perform large animal surgical instrumentation under general anesthesia
  • Serve as lead surgeon in collaboration with a multidisciplinary research team
  • Conduct anesthesia induction and maintenance, endotracheal intubation, and manage animals on mechanical ventilation
  • Maintain a sterile surgical field
  • Independently perform arterial and venous catheter placements and vascular flow probe implantations
  • Execute both acute and chronic instrumentation protocols
  • Instruct and mentor research team members in surgical techniques, anesthesia management, and perioperative animal care
  • Adhere to IACUC regulations and Principal Investigator protocols
  • Perform other duties as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related science field (Master's Degree preferred)
  • Minimum four years of research experience
  • Minimum one year of supervisory experience preferred

Skills

  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English with professional quality
  • Competent in using computer, printer, and necessary software programs
  • Ability to relate and communicate positively with faculty, staff, students, administration, and others
  • Working knowledge of internet-based and smartphone-based software for communication with research/program directors and staff
  • Ability to work calmly and respond courteously under pressure
  • Collaborate and accept direction
  • Critical thinking and effective management of multiple assignments
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills
  • Excellent self-motivation and problem-solving abilities
  • Accurate recall of information and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Maintain high levels of confidentiality and ethical integrity
  • Knowledge of quality and research regulatory requirements
  • Ability to distinguish colors as necessary
  • Adequate hearing for general conversation in person and on the telephone, and to identify and distinguish various workplace sounds
  • Adequate vision to read computer screens and written documents
