Research Associate in the Department of Neurosurgery specializing in Neuroengineering and Translational Nerve Repair

Responsibilities

  • Working with the principal investigator to lead translational research in rodent and porcine models of nerve and spinal cord injury
  • Developing neuroprotective therapeutics, engineered tissues, and implantable devices
  • Managing interdisciplinary teams and coordinating with CROs
  • Supporting grant submissions, intellectual property filings, and early-stage translational activities
  • Disseminating findings through peer-reviewed publications and national presentations
  • Co-teaching academic entrepreneurship courses for graduate and professional students

Requirements

  • Expertise in the specific area of peripheral nerve injury, spinal cord injury, and regenerative technologies, with emphasis on clinically relevant outcome measures in both small and large animal models
  • Experience in neural tissue biofabrication, including biomaterial characterization, in vitro modeling, therapeutic screening, and in vivo implantation
  • Additional expertise in nerve fusion and the delivery and evaluation of neuroprotective drugs

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent degree
  • A demonstrated record of high-impact research and innovation in neural repair, with a minimum of four years of postdoctoral experience
  • Prior involvement in NIH-, DoD-, or VA-funded research is strongly preferred
  • Experience in managing sponsored research projects, including coordination with internal and external collaborators, budget oversight, and regulatory compliance
  • Experience in commercialization activities—such as patent filings, industry collaborations, or early-stage venture formation—is highly valued
  • A strong record of securing intramural and extramural funding
