Research Associate in Biology
About the role
The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia seeks a postdoctoral research associate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Timko. The position is part of a well-established research program focusing on plant genetic engineering, specifically the identification of genes involved in stress response and resistance, as well as synthetic biology approaches to detect environmental contaminants.
Responsibilities
- Perform genetic manipulation of genes and expression vectors and to perform transformation and regeneration of plants.
- Perform routine molecular biological experiments including DNA extractions, PCR/RT-PCR, gene expression profiling with RNAseq technologies.
- Provide supervision and training for graduate and undergraduate researchers.
Requirements
- Completed Ph.D. in plant biology, biochemistry, plant genetics/genomics, or a closely related field by the appointment start date.
- Prior training and experience in basic molecular biology, gene cloning and gene vector construction as evidenced in the applicant's published works.
- Experience in plant cell culture and gene expression analysis/bioinformatics is preferred.
- Prior experience with gene editing (CRISPR, etc) methodologies is highly desirable.
Qualifications
This position requires that the candidate has completed a Ph.D. in plant biology, biochemistry, plant genetics/genomics, or a closely related field by the appointment start date. Pay
The estimated salary range for this position is $62,000 - $64,000, commensurate with experience.
Schedule
The position is a one-year appointment that may be renewed for up to two additional one-year terms, contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued availability of funding.
