Research Associate I – Neurosurgery & Behavior

The Neural Dynamics accelerator aims to understand how the brain generates flexible behavior, uncovering the algorithms implemented by dynamics in brain-wide neural circuits.

About the role

This Research Associate will join the Neurosurgery & Behavior team within the Research Operations department in our Neural Dynamics accelerator. You will perform aseptic stereotaxic surgical procedures and conduct behavior training regimens on mice. The role requires good judgment, problem-solving skills, and the ability to operate complex laboratory instrumentation in a deadline-driven, team-science environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform various aseptic surgical procedures in mice
• Conduct behavioral training regimens with mice
• Participate in transgenic technologies employed in the animal facility
• Provide pre- and post-operative care for mice
• Administer compounds to mice (i.p., s.c., i.m., iv, po, ro, icv)
• Maintain health and behavior performance records
• Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain good laboratory practices
• Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and reporting
• Perform health assessments of mice
• Perform euthanasia and tissue collections
• Perform daily facility maintenance and/or closing procedures
• Meet aggressive timelines and deliverables in a collaborative environment

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, or a related field
• Prior experience handling rodents (mice or rats)
• Proven ability to learn and perform challenging surgical procedures on mice
• Basic knowledge of mouse genetics and anatomy
• Manual dexterity and close attention to detail
• Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds
• Fine motor movements for operating computers and lab equipment
• Repetitive motion with lab equipment
• Push/pull up to 20 lbs
• Stooping, bending, crouching
• Reaching or climbing ladders
• Essential role requiring onsite work regardless of weather or conditions
• Occasional evening and weekend hours
• Primary work location: 615 Westlake Ave N., with limited remote flexibility

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Access
• Ability to learn custom software systems (LIMS, LabTracks)

Work Environment

• Exposure to and handling of laboratory animals
• Possible exposure to chemical, biological, or other hazardous substances
• Possible exposure to BioSafety Level 2 organisms, such as recombinant viruses

Pay

Annualized salary range: $54,250 - $66,450. Final salary depends on education, experience, skills, and work location.

All employees working with live animals must complete an Occupational Health medical history form and/or consultation and receive clearance. Depending on health history and job responsibilities, an annual respiratory health screening and respirator clearance may be required.
