Research Assistant Professor

Tulane University’s Department of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease is seeking a research-track Assistant Professor with expertise in entomology and vector biology.

About the role

The successful candidate will develop and apply cutting-edge methodologies to maintain arthropod colonies and interrogate their biology. They will be eligible to advise PhD students and trainees at all levels, provided they secure the necessary resources. In the first year, 50% of salary support is expected from external funding; the remainder will be covered by the Department and, if available, teaching one course. From the second year onward, the faculty member must generate 100% of their salary support.

Responsibilities

• Lead or participate in sponsored research (50% effort in year 1; 85–100% afterward).
• Teach one course per year, if the opportunity arises (up to 15% effort).
• Attend departmental and general faculty meetings.
• Present at departmental seminars.
• Perform other assigned duties.

Qualifications

• PhD in public health, parasitology, entomology, or a closely related field (preferred).
• At least three years of experience in an academic research setting.
• Proven ability to maintain arthropod colonies.
• Demonstrated history of obtaining or working on major research grants.
• First or senior authorship on high-impact, peer-reviewed publications.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and management skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Preferred experience

• Field work in tick, bug, or mosquito collection.
• More than three years of experience maintaining insect colonies.
• More than one year of teaching experience.
