About the role

The Department of Pediatrics Division of Tropical Medicine seeks a highly motivated Research Assistant II to work in the Laboratory for Translational Virology. The purpose of the position is to conduct responsible research work in virology and immunology. The project will primarily focus on developing vaccines and treatments for high-risk viral pathogens and includes the development of immune assays for the project.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and conducts specialized and advanced research experiments in BSL-2 and BSL-3 environments
  • Performs laboratory work in virology, including infectious work with in vitro and in vivo models, and viral titration assays
  • Works independently and in conjunction with others who are part of the Laboratory for Translational Virology
  • Selects and performs appropriate research procedures and communicates assistance needed in a timely manner
  • Evaluates and analyzes data and may provide biweekly reports to the PI
  • Summarizes research findings in lab meetings
  • Ensures quality control of laboratory procedures, including test validations
  • Performs additional routine laboratory procedures to assist in the lab's research as assigned
  • Maintains an accurate, up-to-date, organized, and legible lab notebook that records all data according to methods requested
  • Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in an appropriate format
  • May assist with preparation of grant applications and publications
  • May assist with training of less experienced research staff

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field
  • Three years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a basic science or related field
  • Previous BSL-3 experience

Work Schedule

After the initial training period, this position will require a work schedule of Sun-Thurs or Mon-Sat and not the traditional Mon-Fri to support the ongoing research needs of the lab.

Work Authorization Requirement: This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of application and throughout the duration of employment.
