Position Summary
Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Research Assistant appointment in the Departments of Life Sciences. The successful candidate will contribute to research projects focused on identifying novel mechanisms involved in regulating HIV latency and understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in HIV-associated neurological disorders. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Vir Singh, Associate Professor of Microbiology.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct, design, and organize basic as well as specialized experiments using established protocols and, in some cases, develop new protocols if required.
- Collect and analyze research data while maintaining detailed records of the experimental design, results, and samples.
- Generate figures with statistical analysis and present the data in research conferences as well as prepare manuscripts for publication.
- Take initiative to maintain effective communication with the supervisor and share data during meetings.
- Supervise and train undergraduate and master’s thesis research students.
- Cook up and coordinate efforts for maximum efficiency and best utilization of resources.
- Order and procure research supplies and dedicate efforts to general maintenance of the laboratory.
- Participate in required training activities.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Willing to learn/enhance skills needed to perform responsibilities through observation and/or experience.
- Demonstrate the ability to both work independently and with little direction and work confidentially with discretion.
- Ability to collaborate with others and work effectively in a team environment.
- This position also requires mentoring of undergraduate students.
- Observe schedules and meet assignment deadlines.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and work ethic.
- Work knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Education And Experience
- BS (required) or MS in natural sciences with at least one year of experience.
- Experience working with biological samples in a research laboratory.
- Experience with cell culture, RNA extraction, RT-PCR, DNA extraction, protein extraction, western blotting, and experience in microbiological techniques.
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
- The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
Additional Information
- This on-site position is based in Albany, NY. The duties and responsibilities of this particular role require the need for consistent, in-person collaboration and/or interaction with our community, requiring all work to be performed full-time on-site.
- Standard work hours are from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM EST, Monday through Friday.
