Research Assistant
Job Summary
The Scholars Program at the Getty Research Institute (GRI) invites applications from highly motivated graduate students to join our team of Research Assistants. These part-time positions support the research, publications, exhibitions, and related activities of an international cohort of scholars based at both the Getty Center in Brentwood and the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades. We welcome applicants specializing in the art and visual cultures of all periods and regions. Up to four positions are available, including one designated for a candidate with expertise in archaeology and the history of the ancient world, particularly the Mediterranean and the neighboring regions of transalpine Europe, the Near East, North Africa, and Central Asia. Applicants with experience in provenance research and related fields—including the history of collecting, the study of the art market, and broader questions concerning the ownership and movement of cultural objects—are also encouraged to apply.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Conducting research in art history, archaeology, provenance, and related fields using library resources, special collections, and digital databases.
- S supporting project development by organizing and documenting materials, compiling bibliographies, identifying and requesting relevant publications, and conducting literature reviews.
- Requesting images for exhibitions and publications and obtaining necessary copyright permissions.
- Proofreading, editing, and translating project materials as needed.
- Assisting with the creation of project websites and PowerPoint presentations.
- Performing additional tasks as assigned to support the overall research goals of the scholar.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in art history, archaeology, classics, history, or a related field strongly preferred
- 0-2 years research experience (education may be considered)
- Working knowledge in at least one foreign language preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a timely manner
- Ability to build relationships, collaborate and work on teams
- Ability to set and meet deadlines for oneself
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe software suites preferred
