About the role

The Representative Payee position at RADIAS Health provides professional, quality program services to clients served. The representative payee is responsible for managing Social Security or Supplemental Security Income on behalf of clients to ensure their basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter are met. Additionally, the payee may manage other expenses such as medical bills, transportation costs, and large purchases.

Responsibilities

  • Determine a client's basic monthly needs and how best to pay them based on their income and abilities to self-budget.
  • Determine a personal needs schedule and rate through consultation with client, service providers, and use of individual judgment.
  • Set reasonable limits with clients who demonstrate inability to spend benefits appropriately.
  • Pay rent, utilities, and personal needs by utilizing the Representative Payee Management system to schedule payments.
  • For clients on MA spend downs, set aside money each month to pay medical bills.
  • For clients not on MA spend downs, pay medical bills as they arise.
  • Assess client’s ability to budget benefits and set up a budget plan to purchase food, clothing, and other personal items.
  • Pay other bills, including property taxes, transportation costs, and large one-time purchases such as an automobile or appliances.
  • Utilize the phone to exchange information and do problem solving with clients and providers.
  • Return phone calls promptly.
  • Meet with clients and providers to discuss financial issues and budget plans.
  • Collaborate with case managers when issues arise that are beyond the financial realm, such as finding and maintaining affordable housing.
  • Seek consultation with case managers when there is ongoing conflict with clients regarding finances and spending or when the representative payee desires case managers' input.
  • Utilize verbal de-escalation skills with clients who are angry or threatening.
  • Complete a Representative Payee Report (Form SSA-623-OCR-SM) for each client once a year and send it to the Social Security Administration.
  • Maintain a courteous and professional tone and manner with clients and providers in all communication.
  • Receive referrals from SSA, case managers, and other service providers and process accordingly.
  • Maintain a file for each client which contains bills, written notifications from Social Security, and other paperwork as needed.
  • Meet with the Director of Housing & Community Development regularly to discuss system issues, job performance, and to obtain feedback and assistance with problem solving.
  • Complete all paperwork, reports, and charting contemporaneously and in an organized manner.
  • Participate actively in on-going professional growth and development; maintain appropriate professional behavior and participate in appropriate supervision.
  • Maintain a pattern of regular work hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • 2,000 hours of experience working with adults who have serious and persistent mental illness or chemical dependency
