Repair Technician I

About the role

Service mechanic primarily performing shop repairs of high-speed separators and decanters at the Service Center, with occasional travel to customer sites (approximately 10% travel time).

Responsibilities

  • Disassemble and inspect machines to determine required repair scope.
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as vibration analysis, bearing temperature measurement, visual crack detection, wear assessment, oil quality evaluation, and cause of excessive noise.
  • Read and understand engineering drawings.
  • Use precision measuring equipment to perform dimensional inspection of parts and T.I.R. inspection of rotating equipment such as shafts and bowls.
  • Perform liquid dye penetrant examination of parts to evaluate condition.
  • Determine whether a component should be replaced or repaired, documenting condition on inspection forms.
  • Balance rotating assemblies.
  • Perform complete mechanical repairs on separators and decanters from disassembly and inspection to reassembly and installation.
  • Travel in the western U.S. to perform removal, installation, and field repairs of separation equipment.
  • Assess equipment performance to determine whether a problem is due to equipment malfunction or process change.
  • Obtain O&M manuals and parts lists for machines to prepare quotes from internal or external sources.
  • Maintain close cooperation and coordination with the service manager and/or service sales engineer for projects in the Service Center and in the field.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or above.
  • Certification as a skilled technician in a highly technical field (e.g., centrifuges, automatic transmission, food production machinery, rotary compressors, or turbines).
  • Experience with vibration analysis, alignment, and balancing equipment.
  • Ability to disassemble and rebuild separation equipment, including testing and adjusting machine settings to optimize performance.
  • Ability to work independently in the field after extensive training.

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Minimum of five years of food industry experience, preferably servicing food machines like separators and decanters.
  • Familiarity with Andritz Frautech products and competitors’ products (e.g., Westfalia, Alfa-Laval, Pieralisi).
  • Familiarity with applications in and beyond the food industry where high-speed separators and decanters are installed in the Western United States.

Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with proficiency in the use of hand tools.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Basic understanding of controls, electrical power requirements, motor interlocks, and instrumentation.
  • Strong customer and solution focus.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work without supervision at customers’ sites.
