About the role
We are a 100% employee-owned, fee-only fiduciary wealth management firm with over three decades of history, growing steadily and independently. We are not a public accounting firm; we are a fully integrated wealth management practice where tax, investment management, financial planning, and estate planning sit under one roof and work together as one team serving the same clients. We are hiring a Tax Manager to join our in‑house tax team, working on sophisticated high‑net‑worth (HNW) client work with no billable hours and a compensation structure that includes overtime pay during busy season.
Why this role is different:
- No billable hours — ever. Tax Managers receive a client list each season and pull from a shared preparation queue; there is no billable target, utilization rate, or timesheet to justify.
- Overtime paid at straight time — when hours exceed a defined threshold during busy season, the firm pays the additional time at straight time.
- Wealth management, not public accounting — tax is one piece of a fully integrated client relationship that includes investments, planning, estate, and tax, making the work more holistic, advisory, and meaningful.
- 100% employee‑owned — the firm is owned by the people who work here, keeping incentives aligned, decisions local, and culture intact, with no outside shareholders or private‑equity agenda.
- Sophisticated, high‑touch clients — business owners, generational‑wealth families, and senior executives; the client base is complex, relationships are deep, and work goes well beyond routine 1040 preparation.
- Remote already proven — the firm has standing remote tax professionals outside the home market who come on‑site just 3–4 times per year around key deadlines; this is not a new experiment.
- Fully integrated team — you will work alongside investment managers, financial planners, and estate specialists on the same client relationships, a level of collaboration and context that public accounting cannot offer.
Responsibilities
- Review and sign off on complex HNW individual tax returns — strong 1040 review experience is the core of this role.
- Manage an assigned client list each tax season and pull from a shared preparation queue.
- Advise clients directly on tax planning matters in coordination with investment and planning teams.
- Collaborate with financial planners, investment managers, and estate specialists on comprehensive client strategy.
- Stay current on tax law changes affecting high‑net‑worth individuals, business owners, and executives.
- Contribute to team development and workflow improvement initiatives.
Requirements
- Active CPA or EA required — MST combo considered.
- 5–6+ years of tax experience with a meaningful HNW individual focus.
- Strong 1040 review experience required — you must be comfortable signing off on complex individual returns.
- Public accounting or private wealth background welcome — but candidates looking to transition away from tax entirely are not the right fit here.
- Comfortable working in a remote‑first environment with 3–4 on‑site visits per year.
- EST or CST time zone preferred — MST considered.
Benefits
- 401(k) — 5% employer match regardless of employee contribution.
- Employer‑contributed medical coverage.
- No billable hours — ever.
- 100% employee‑owned, fee‑only fiduciary culture.
- Remote work proven (3–4 on‑site visits per year).
Pay
- Base salary up to $1
