Multiple vacancies available—join our team as a Kitchen Helper in remote camp locations. This role maintains sanitation standards and performs cleaning, maintenance, food preparation, stocking, and serving duties in commercial kitchens, storerooms, dining, and serving areas.
Responsibilities
- Assist cooks and coordinate activities within the food service area.
- Prepare and cook vegetables, entrees, coffee, sauces, meats, and other food items.
- Maintain product levels in preparation, serving, or storage areas, including service machines.
- Stock food service areas with products and materials.
- Clean dishes, utensils, pots, and pans, and organize them in assigned storage areas.
- Wash objects by hand or with cleaning equipment.
- Clean, sweep, and wipe down dining, kitchen, storage areas, spike rooms, and equipment, including floors.
- Assist with large cleaning projects as scheduled.
- Remove garbage from assigned areas.
- Set up, break down, and clean tables, snack bars, display cases, and serving lines.
- Notify supervisor if safety or sanitation standards are not met.
- Perform other duties pertinent to the department’s success as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- At least one (1) year of work experience in a commercial kitchen or documented vocational training demonstrating knowledge of industrial cleaning equipment, restaurant food preparation, and commercial cleaning processes.
- Must obtain an Alaska Food Workers Card and/or ServSafe Certification upon hire.
- Must pass pre-employment requirements, including drug test, BAT, physical and fit-for-duty assessment, and hearing test. Applicants not near a testing facility are responsible for travel expenses to the nearest location.
- Ability to work as part of a team and make decisions with little supervision.
- Must be on your feet for 12-hour shifts as scheduled.
- Must live in dormitory-style settings and meet remote camp cleanliness requirements.
- Must speak, understand, read, and write English as required by the contract.
- Must adhere to all company and client safety guidelines and regulations.
Requirements
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Environment: Industrial kitchen in a remote camp, frequently exposed to arctic conditions.
- Noise level: Moderate to loud.
- Physical demands: Constant standing, walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, using hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
- Travel: Must be able to travel by plane and/or bus to remote camps.
- Fit-for-Duty Test requirements:
- Lift 50 lbs. from floor to knuckle (2 reps).
- Lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist (2 reps).
- Lift 35 lbs. from floor to shoulders (2 reps).
- Stoop & Twist: Perform alternate cross-over toe touches (10 reps per side).
- Kneel: Alternate kneeling on each knee (5 reps per knee).
- Squat: Functional squats (5 reps).
- Stairs: Climb up and down 10 steps (6 sets, 60 steps total) with a 30-second rest after each 30 steps.
- Stairs & Carry: Climb up and down 10 steps (6 sets, 60 steps total) while carrying 10 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand for safety, with a 30-second rest after each 30 steps.
Candidates Residing Outside Fairbanks Area
- For pre-employment testing, Fairbanks, AK is considered the point of hire (except for drug testing, conducted near the candidate’s residence).
- Candidates are responsible for travel expenses and accommodations related to pre-employment tasks in Fairbanks, including safety training, physicals, DOT medical cards, fit-for-duty assessments, audiograms, and other contract-required testing (e.g., NSTC, APICC training, security licensing).
- For Alyeska contracts, pre-employment testing will be scheduled near the candidate’s residence in Alaska unless local service providers are unavailable.
- Employees are responsible for expenses related to reporting to Fairbanks for company-paid flights to remote locations.
