About the role
This role combines accounting work and continuous improvement, involving full ownership of the monthly close cycle across all client engagements.
Responsibilities
- Documenting processes and SOPs
- Creating clear workpaper standards and review procedures
- Cross-training and knowledge-coverage matrices
- Working with a team that independently holds a high bar for quality
- Monthly Close Execution: Full ownership of the monthly close cycle across all client engagements—ensuring timing, accuracy, and presentation quality for every deliverable leaving the firm.
- Team Leadership & Development: Lead, delegate to, and develop an accounting team (managers and staff accountants). Hold the line on high standards—including navigating uncomfortable performance conversations with direct feedback.
- System & Quality Architecture: Own and enforce the quality system: SOPs, workpaper standards, review procedures, error logging with 24-hour root-cause disclosure, and cross-training coverage.
- Continuous Improvement: Establish an operating rhythm of documented quarterly process improvements, automation initiatives with measured time savings, and year-over-year faster closes.
- Technical Escalation: Serve as the firm’s ultimate authority on complex GAAP questions and technical accounting judgment, removing executive leadership from day-to-day technical escalations.
Qualifications
- Required: GAAP Mastery: Deep GAAP fluency and hands-on ownership of full-cycle accrual monthly closes. Ability to define, teach, measure, and enforce standard-of-excellence accounting.
- Team Leadership: Proven track record of leading and developing accounting teams, including setting clear expectations and delivering candid, constructive feedback.
- System-Building Track Record: Proven history of building systems that outlived your direct involvement (e.g., SOPs, review structures, cross-training programs, close calendars).
- Work Schedule: Ability to consistently work U.S. Pacific Standard Time (PST) hours in a fully remote setup.
- PREFERRED: Multi-Client/Multi-Entity Experience: Background in outsourced accounting, Client Accounting Services (CAS), or public accounting strongly preferred.
- INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE: Nonprofit Accounting and/or Private Equity (PE) experience strongly preferred.
- CERTIFICATIONS: CPA, CMA, or equivalent technical credibility strongly preferred.
