This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Above Ground Storage Tank (AST) inspector for the Maintenance Programs group. This position supports the Above Ground Storage Tank Program and reports to the Maintenance and Site Services Maintenance Programs (MSS-MP) Group Lead. The selected candidate must have a strong mechanical background and will assist the current AST inspector and/or perform monthly and annual inspections on ASTs at the Laboratory.

Responsibilities

Engineering Technologist 1 ($87,800 - $143,000)

  • Work directly with multiple facilities to ensure ASTs are inspected as required per SP001, NMAC 20.5, and other applicable state and federal codes and standards.
  • Perform inspections and generate reports under the supervision of the senior AST Inspector.
  • Work with appropriate personnel to correct identified deficiencies and ensure ASTs comply with state and federal codes and standards.
  • Perform NDE examinations for call-out work across all facilities, certified in NDE Level 2 UTT, MT, and PT.
  • Support inspection of various styles and configurations of ASTs, including New Mexico State registered and non-registered ASTs, ensuring code compliance, leak-free operation, adequate venting, preventative maintenance, and follow-up on recommended repairs.
  • Manage inspection records through PC/Tablet-based software.

Engineering Technologist 2 ($96,600 - $158,000)

In addition to the responsibilities outlined for Engineering Technologist 1, at this level you will:

  • Schedule inspections and necessary equipment with asset owners.
  • Maintain work execution metrics to track the progress of the AST program.
  • Communicate with work groups outside of MSS-MP to streamline inspection execution.
  • Maintain and update the equipment database as the program grows.
  • Provide subject-matter expert (SME) level review of Operation and Maintenance/Preventative Maintenance documents.
  • Interface with engineering design review, applications of engineering methods, and technology-aided engineering tools.
  • Leverage experience in erecting, inspecting, and repair/alteration of Above Ground Storage Tanks.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to level II AST inspectors.
  • Support Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspection programs.
  • Develop resolutions to complex problems requiring frequent use of creativity and in-depth evaluation of variable factors.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work within a team-based environment to complete projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and common software platforms (e.g., Microsoft Office) and records management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on assignments.
  • Working experience with ASTs, NDE, mechanical systems, and fixed equipment.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 2:

  • Demonstrated experience in design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance of ASTs.
  • Demonstrated experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections I, II, V, VIII, and IX.
  • Demonstrated experience with the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors NB-23 code and related standards for design, construction, installation, inspection, operation, maintenance, repair, alteration, and re-rating of boilers, pressure vessels, and piping systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with API 650, 510, 571, 653, 651, 652, and 579 related to ASTs and fixed equipment.
  • Working knowledge of non-destructive testing techniques and welding processes for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections V and IX.

Qualifications

Training/Certifications:

  • ASNT-TC 1A NDE Level II in UTT, MT, and PT (required for Engineering Technologist 1).
  • STI SP001 certification and ASNT-TC 1A NDE Level II in UTT, MT, and PT (highly desired for Engineering Technologist 2).

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 1 level:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related field and 2 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience (10 years of directly related experience).
  • Candidates meeting the degree requirement but lacking the two-year experience requirement may still apply and be considered for hire through an allowable variance.

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 2 level:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related field and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience (13 years of directly related experience).

Desired Qualifications

  • STI SP001 certification.
  • Certifications in API 653, NM A/B/C Operator.
  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance.
  • At least one year of experience in a nuclear facility.
  • Awareness of LANL Quality Policies and Procedures.
  • Experience using Plant Condition Management Software (PCMS).

Essential Job Functions

  • Standing, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, and stooping.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Clearance

This position requires a Q clearance. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Obtaining such clearance requires U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required.
