Release of Information Advocate
About the role
This position is responsible for performing a variety of clerical duties and processing requests for disability and the release of health information. You will communicate and interact with customers requesting Protected Health Information (PHI) documentation, ensuring requests are responded to appropriately and timely. As needed, you will provide instruction to requestors related to procedures for obtaining medical record information and patient authorization requirements. Periodically, you may be assigned special projects and related duties and may be required to assist in other areas of the department as determined by the manager.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Department Receptionist, following up with requestors regarding delays.
- Educate requestors on procedures for obtaining medical record information.
- Respond to telephone inquiries from patients, attorneys, insurance companies, and DFCI clinical and professional staff regarding the release of Protected Health Information.
- Review authorizations for completeness, follow up as necessary, and return requests for insufficient information to clinics, patients, or requestors.
- Process emergency fax requests as required.
- Release health information by facsimile in emergency situations after verification according to procedure.
- Retrieve medical records as necessary from offsite vendors.
- Open mail, stamp the date received, and confirm the medical record number.
- Screen health records for any confidential and sensitive information not covered under a general authorization.
- Operate a computerized tracking system to enter/edit and/or access information.
- Utilize the electronic health record to print computerized PHI.
- Meet productivity standards established by the manager.
- Provide the manager with daily statistics to ensure staffing levels reflect workload requirements.
- Request CDs from Imaging.
Requirements
- One year of experience in a health-related field.
- Proficiency in computer use, data entry, and attention to detail.
- High school education preferred.
Skills
- Experience using medical information systems.
- Thorough knowledge of confidentiality and privacy laws established by Federal and State guidelines, and adherence to DFCI and departmental policies.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent oral communication and delivery of exemplary customer service.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and determine pertinent health information needed for patient care under pressure.
- Detailed-oriented with the ability to multi-task and adapt to changes quickly.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Self-motivated, proactive in communicating progress and issues, and able to manage time effectively to meet deadlines and prioritize workload.
- Professionalism in ensuring PHI is kept confidential.
- Ability to sort documents alphabetically, sequentially by numbers, dates, and types, and check documents for completeness.
Patient Contact
Work requires contact with patients and/or visitors, as well as DFCI clinical and professional staff, which involves courtesy.
Pay
$46,500.00 - $50,300.00
