Relay Test Technician
About the role

Our Assistant Relay Test Technicians play a critical role in supporting the safe and reliable operation of high-voltage substations by assisting with relay testing, commissioning, and maintenance under the guidance of experienced technicians. This role provides exceptional hands-on training and exposure to protection systems, giving you the opportunity to grow into advanced technical responsibilities within a strong culture of safety, integrity, and service.
Responsibilities
- Support the testing, commissioning, and maintenance of protective relays and control systems within electrical substations.
- Under the guidance of senior technicians, learn industry-standard testing practices, relay logic, and protection scheme fundamentals.
- Assist with installation, calibration, and functional testing of microprocessor-based relays.
- Develop relay test routines, macros, and test plans for Overcurrent, Transformer, Bus Differential, and Distance protection schemes.
- Support end-to-end testing, system commissioning, and equipment energization under supervision.
- Examine and understand protection schemes, logic diagrams, and scheme operation principles.
- Participate in troubleshooting activities for distribution and transmission protection systems.
- Utilize test equipment and software to verify proper relay performance and compliance with design standards.
- Uphold Asplundh's safety culture by following all policies, procedures, and industry best practices.
- Provide accurate documentation, test results, and field notes to support project close-out requirements.
Requirements
- Ability to read and understand one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and control drawings.
- Foundational understanding of electrical theory, phasing, polarity, vectors, and basic logic gates.
- Aptitude for troubleshooting control circuits and assisting with functional, end-to-end, and commissioning tests.
- Familiarity with relay test software (Doble ProTest, Protection Suite, or similar) preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and commitment to safe work practices.
- Ability to work collaboratively, take direction, and grow technical proficiency over time.
- Willingness to travel for project assignments and work overtime when required.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
- Physical ability to lift up to 70 lbs., climb ladders, and work on your feet for extended periods.
Qualifications
- Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
- Equivalent amount of education, training and/or military training in electrical systems strongly considered (Journeyman, Apprentice Electrician, US Army Prime Power School, US Navy Nuclear Electrician Program, etc).
- NETA certification (Level I or II) is a plus but not required for entry-level.
- Prior hands-on experience with substations, relay testing, or high-voltage equipment is beneficial but not mandatory for entry-level applicants showing strong aptitude and willingness to learn.

Pay
$30–$35 per hour.
Schedule
Work will be performed at customer sites throughout the assigned region. Ability to travel regularly within the region is required, and the capability to travel outside the region for extended assignments is ideal.
