Relay Technician (Duke)

About the role

This position requires general supervision and technical skills in the maintenance and construction of substation protective relay and SCADA control systems. Essential functions include testing and repair of protective relays, functional testing, commissioning and repair of relay protection systems, and repair and testing of SCADA control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Relay C&M activities in accordance with Duke Energy relay construction and maintenance standards.
  • Support the planning and scheduling of crew work activities.
  • Maintain accurate records and operate all tools and test equipment used to maintain substation protective relay systems.
  • Interface with other people to make maintenance activities work smoothly.
  • May be subject to callouts, overtime, and overnight travel as necessary to support work and attend training in other locations.

Requirements

  • Minimum four (4) years of Relay experience performing field protection, SCADA, and Control work.
  • Must pass PRA (Personal Risk Assessment) seven (7) year background check.
  • Must demonstrate basic computer skills and have basic knowledge of Relay related software.
  • Must possess good communication skills, including working with others to create good working conditions.
  • Must demonstrate good verbal communications skills.
  • Must complete understanding of print reading, print marking processes.
  • Must demonstrate good field decision-making skills.
  • Must be fully trained in operation of lulls, forklifts, and aerial devices.
  • Must have firm understanding of safe work practices and safety culture.
  • Must have firm understanding of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, Transmission and Distribution SCADA, communications.
  • Must be capable of writing isolation procedures and independent reviews.
  • Must demonstrate good understanding of NERC compliance and importance for accurate data and timely completion.
  • Must be skilled at trouble shooting P&C circuits.
  • Must be able to think methodically and arrange activities in logical order.
  • Must understand CT and VT circuits.
  • Must understand Carrier and Tone equipment.
  • Must have full understanding of Human Performance tools, skills, and techniques.
  • Must have complete understanding of ASPEN and reporting.
  • Must have complete understanding of NERC compliance and importance for accurate data and timely completion.
  • Must have skilled at trouble shooting P&C circuits.
  • Must be able to think methodically and arrange activities in logical order.
  • Must understand CT and VT circuits.
  • Must understand Carrier and Tone equipment.
  • Must be fully trained in operation of lulls, forklifts, and aerial devices.
