About the role

Relay Tech 1 Union: $55.42 per hour
Relay Tech II Union: $6160 per hour

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Inspects and tests relays and other substation equipment to ensure proper operation, utilizing such equipment as voltmeters, ammeters, phase angle meters, oscilloscopes and related electrical testing equipment
  • Installs and maintains substation, transmission, and distribution Protection systems
  • Trains and instructs less experienced personnel in techniques of relay maintenance and other duties by applying a full working knowledge of safe work procedures as outlined in the Safety Manual
  • Available to perform on call work as necessary
  • Serves as either dispatcher or switchman
  • Properly creates "As Built" drawings for changes to protection systems
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of electrical theory, transformer theory, math and drafting
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of safe and proper testing techniques
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of protection system construction and maintenance
  • Ability to operate power tools and electrical testing equipment
  • Ability to recognize and communicate hazardous conditions

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or GED with three to five years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the discipline.
  • College level course work in an engineering discipline or related vocational training preferred.
  • Prior Experience Working In Substation Equipment Test Preferred where incumbent is required to operate machinery and/or equipment covered under the State Motor Carrier Act, the incumbent must meet requirements of Part 391 of the Act (Driver Qualification) before operating such equipment.

Communication Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as Power factor, MVA, MW, and MVAR
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry

Analysis And Problem-solving Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving few concrete variables in standardized situations

Physical Demands

  • Ability to perform physical activity associated with climbing poles, such as pushing, pulling, lifting and bending
  • Ability to lift, carry, and push up to 50 pounds and pull up to 75 pounds

Job Description Relay Tech II Union: $6160 Per Hour

Summary: Under limited supervision, inspects, tests, maintains, and installs relay and control equipment in electrical substations and performs other substation maintenance duties related to protection systems.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Ability to install, maintain, test, adjust, troubleshoot and repair relay and control equipment in electrical substations which includes, but is not limited to electromechanical, solid state and digital protective relays, instrument transformers, indicating and KWH/KW meters, recording instruments including sequential event recorders and digital fault recorders, controls to all substation equipment including breakers, transformers, regulators, capacitors, reactors and all associated equipment, and remote control equipment including various forms of SCADA

  • Strong knowledge of protective relay applications, testing and operations of both electromechanical, solid state, and digital relays
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of electrical theory, transformer theory, math and drafting
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of safe and proper testing techniques
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Protection system operation and maintenance
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical circuits via AC and DC schematics
  • Ability to operate power tools and electrical testing equipment
  • Ability to recognize and communicate hazardous conditions

Qualifications

  • Previous Experience Testing Relays Is Required.
  • College level course work in an engineering discipline or related vocational training preferred.
