About the Role

This is the first level of the Relay Technician hierarchy. A Learner Relay Tech will assist a higher-level technician in activities associated with relay construction and maintenance. Incumbents are expected to develop intermediate skills and the ability to work with greater independence.

A Transmission Relay Tech I will assist a higher-level technician and sometimes safely lead a lower-level technician in activities associated with relay construction and maintenance. Incumbents are expected to develop complex skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks with direct oversight, demonstrating a firm grasp of safe work practices and safety culture.
  • Understand fundamentals of Human Performance Tools and requirements.
  • Gain understanding of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, distribution SCADA, and communications.
  • Develop basic isolation procedure writing skills.
  • Demonstrate good verbal communication skills.
  • Master print reading and the red mark process.
  • Understand RTS and its use, as well as ASPEN and reporting.
  • Comprehend NERC compliance and the importance of accurate data and timely completion.
  • Develop basic troubleshooting skills and the ability to think methodically.
  • Gain basic understanding of CT and VT circuits, with exposure to Carrier and Tone equipment.
  • Assist in the submittal of accurate records and files.
  • Support the company’s goals and represent the company positively and professionally.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated availability for after-hours work and call-out rotation.
  • Strive to continually improve job-related, technical, and professional knowledge, skills, and performance.
  • Develop positive working relationships and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid State Driver’s License.
  • Ability to pass required background checks for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance.
  • Must pass the appropriate level of Duke aptitude test.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. for 100 feet.
  • Permanent residence approximately forty-five minutes from base location (preferred).
  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job.

Qualifications

Learner Relay Tech

  • Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology
  • In lieu of Associate’s degree: High School/GED and two (2) or more years of related work experience

Transmission Relay Tech I

  • Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology and one (1) or more years of related work experience
  • In lieu of Associate’s degree and related work experience: High School/GED and three (3) or more years of related work experience

Working Conditions

  • Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a designated company facility in North or South Carolina.
  • Must be available for after-hours work and call-out rotation.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. for 100 feet.
