Role and Responsibilities
The Oil & Gas Regulatory Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of oil and gas severance taxes, royalties, and related regulatory filings across multiple state agencies. This position ensures compliance with applicable state reporting requirements through the preparation, reconciliation, and submission of regulatory reports.
- Prepare and submit accurate and timely state severance tax reports and associated payments.
- Prepare and submit applicable state royalty reports in coordination with Revenue Accounting.
- Ensure compliance with state regulatory reporting requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
- Maintain detailed regulatory records, filings, and supporting documentation.
- Monitor reporting deadlines to ensure timely submissions.
Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare and submit accurate and timely state severance tax reports and associated payments.
- Prepare and submit applicable state royalty reports in coordination with Revenue Accounting.
- Ensure compliance with state regulatory reporting requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
- Maintain detailed regulatory records, filings, and supporting documentation.
- Monitor reporting deadlines to ensure timely submissions.
Reconciliation & Analysis
- Reconcile production, purchaser statements, and revenue data used in regulatory reporting.
- Research, investigate, and resolve reporting discrepancies.
- Respond to agency inquiries and reporting issues.
- Maintain the accuracy and integrity of regulatory reporting data.
Audit & Regulatory Support
- Support state audits related to production reporting, severance taxes, and royalties.
- Provide requested documentation during regulatory reviews and audits.
- Afford assistance in maintaining compliance with applicable state reporting requirements.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Cook with Production Accounting, Revenue Accounting, Land, and Operations to obtain reporting information.
- Communicate with internal stakeholders regarding reporting requirements and deadlines.
- Support team initiatives to improve regulatory reporting accuracy and efficiency.
Skills
- Knowledge of state oil and gas regulatory reporting requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines across numerous states and operators.
Qualifications and Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in oil and gas regulatory reporting, production accounting, royalty reporting, or severance tax reporting.
- Working knowledge of state regulatory reporting requirements and federal royalty reporting.
- Experience in CO, WY, and Northern Rockies preferred.
- Experience supporting state audits and regulatory requests.
- Knowledge of production accounting, revenue accounting, and division order processes preferred.
