Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide competent and proficient technical skills in the performance of STAT and routine echocardiogram procedures while implementing procedural standards and protocols.
- Ensures that all echo procedures are completed within the designated time frame.
- Documents appropriate assessment on all patients and documents all information on the technician sheets. Specific reasons for limited examinations must be documented.
- The Echo Technician assumes the responsibilities specified by the Director of Cardiovascular Lab or Medical Director, and is responsible for the performance of clinical examinations and other assigned tasks.
- Performs echocardiographic studies to include evaluating cardiac structures and identifying abnormalities as ordered by the physician for diagnosing heart ailments.
- Analyzes echocardiographic studies by measuring cardiac chambers, wall thickness, and evaluating cardiac valve function.
- Communicates with the cardiologist on echocardiographic studies discussing any questions in regard to each patient study as required.
- Processes echocardiographic studies in accordance with established departmental standards.
- Responsible for call coverage assignments, responds to requests for call-in duty for STAT testing.
- Responsible for the daily technical operation of the laboratory and is able to prioritize assignments.
- Responsible for working with the Medical Director, medical staff, and technical staff to ensure quality patient care.
- The technician completes competencies in the operation of all imaging and monitoring related equipment and report equipment problems to appropriate staff.
- Provides for patient comfort and safety for all procedures.
- Adheres to hospital policies for infection control and transducer cleaning.
- Patients remain under the technologist care from the time of their arrival in the echo lab adhering to patient care and echo lab standards.
- Maintains an organized, safe and efficient work environment.
- Takes responsibility for accurately recording all procedures on hard copy as well as the department log book.
- Insures that appropriate procedure has been ordered and charged.
- Complies with OSHA or other regulatory body standards and infection control standards and policies.
- Documents in the inpatient chart that the study is completed and gives preliminary results exactly as stated in the department protocol.
- Takes responsibility for and conveys outpatient test results precisely as stated in the department protocol.
- Maintains neat and clean work area.
- Maintains policies for cleaning of equipment, including all probes and filters.
- Reports equipment malfunctions, operational problems and inventory depletion immediately to clinical engineering and Manager of department.
- Adheres to hospital regarding routine inspection and testing for electrical safety of all existing equipment.

- Affords assistance in facilitating completion of projects, including accrediting bodies.
- Participates in maintaining professional growth, self-development objectives, and skill enhancement.
- Assesses own educational needs and planning, implementing strategies learning plan to meet knowledge deficiencies.
- Develops a learning plan and tracks progress on a learning log.
- Independently schedules self to complete the required certifications i.e. CPR.
- Actively participates in hospital wide related activities.
- Participates in departmental recognition and socialization activities.
- Attends all departmental staff meetings.
- Participates in efforts to improve productivity in the department.
- Participates in efforts to contain costs or generate revenue in the department.
- SUBMITS IDEAS FOR REDUCING EXPENSES OR ADDING REVENUE.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
- Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge: Successful completion of an ultrasound/echo technology or cardiovascular technology accredited program that includes verified didactic and supervised clinical experience in echocardiographic testing or completion of a formal two year program or equivalent in another allied health profession or completion of a bachelor’s degree unrelated to echo technology.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
- Knowledge of all echo department equipment and their protocols.
- Three years experience required for adult and pediatric echo’s.
- Skills: Excellent organizational skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Abilities: Ability to work well with others and provide problem-solving skills.Ability to anticipate patient, employee, and department needs.
