About the role
The Registration Specialist is responsible for check-in, preregistration, registration, preadmission, and admission. These functions include obtaining accurate and thorough demographic information, ensuring compliance with CMS, government payors, commercial and third-party payors, EMTALA, and The Joint Commission rules and regulations. Responsibilities also include benefit verification, preauthorization requirements, obtaining signatures on consent for treatment, co-pay collection, and other payments on previous balances. The role involves issuing Medicare/Tricare Important Messages, Patient Rights and Responsibilities, and handling HIPAA forms, photo ID, insurance cards, and signed forms or orders.
The Registration Specialist works closely with other personnel to ensure a smooth, timely flow of patients and information to maximize reimbursement for services, promotes harmonious intra- and inter-departmental relationships, and delivers quality customer service. This position requires working and maintaining system work queues, answering telephones, faxing, scanning, and performing various other duties as assigned. The individual will be cross-trained with System Scheduling, Authorization, & Referrals to assist as needed and must handle restricted or confidential information from multiple sources within the Healthcare System.
Responsibilities
- Obtain accurate and thorough demographic information during check-in, preregistration, registration, preadmission, and admission.
- Ensure compliance with CMS, government payors, commercial and third-party payors, EMTALA, and The Joint Commission rules and regulations.
- Perform benefit verification and preauthorization requirements.
- Obtain signatures on consent for treatment, collect co-pays, and process payments on previous balances.
- Issue Medicare/Tricare Important Messages and Patient Rights and Responsibilities.
- Obtain photo ID, insurance cards, signed forms, and orders (when applicable) and scan them into the medical record.
- Work and maintain system work queues.
- Answer telephones, fax, scan documents, and perform other administrative duties as assigned.
- Cross-train with System Scheduling, Authorization, & Referrals to assist as needed.
- Collaborate with other personnel to ensure a smooth, timely flow of patients and information to maximize reimbursement for services.
- Promote harmonious and efficient intra- and inter-departmental relationships and deliver quality customer service.
- Handle restricted or confidential information from various sources within the Healthcare System.
- Perform any additional duties assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Two years of experience in a business, billing, or healthcare scheduling/registration/admissions setting preferred.
- Proficiency in using computers and software programs is essential.
- Must maintain a professional and courteous manner in all communications with customers and staff.
- Must demonstrate appropriate and timely independent judgment.
Schedule
Part-time position (48 hours per 2-week pay period) with benefits. Typical hours are variable shifts, including 1 day shift (7am to 7pm) and 1 night shift (7pm to 7am) per week.
