Registrar - Admitting 110

Under general supervision, the Registrar I is responsible for patient registration, including interviews, updating hospital systems, obtaining consent, and ensuring information accuracy. This role handles routine patient inquiries, collaborates with SRH departments and physician offices, greets patients, and processes them to appropriate areas.

Responsibilities

• Interviews patients in person or by phone to obtain all required information for hospital records and billing systems. Registers or pre-registers all scheduled patients for admission, partial hospitalization, and outpatient services according to department policies.
• Obtains bed assignments from the appropriate department. Follows up with nursing stations, keeping patients/families informed when no bed is immediately available. Maintains awareness of patient comfort during waits and advises supervisors if a patient cannot wait. Notifies nursing units of patients going to rooms.
• Obtains patient and/or responsible party signatures on registration forms and provides required information regarding Advanced Directives, Privacy, Ethnicity, Medicare, Medi-Cal, and Tricare as necessary.
• Verifies insurance coverage and obtains authorization for all services requiring pre-certification. Takes appropriate steps when required authorization is unavailable.
• Prepares charts and paperwork for patient visits. Places identification wristbands on patients and follows SRH procedures for patient identification at all times.
• Determines upfront payment or deposit based on third-party coverage and requests payment from patients or family members following SRH scripting for point-of-service collections. Logs payments, produces receipts, and prepares deposit records within SRH cash handling policies.
• Screens patients for Medi-Cal or hospital-sponsored financial programs, provides appropriate documentation, and enrolls patients as needed. Explains payment options to patients.
• Collects and disburses valuables envelopes after verifying patient or family identification.
• Performs clerical functions such as answering phones, taking messages, processing charts, filing, faxing, and assisting patients with billing questions, including accepting payments at any registration location.
• Maintains confidentiality of information at all times in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
• Ensures compliance with department policy and procedure for registration quality, including timely correction and/or leader notification.

• Maintains a clean, neat, and orderly work area and works safely at all times.
• Provides escort and assists in patient transport to appropriate locations as needed.
• Demonstrates competency in communication with adolescent, adult, or geriatric patients relative to age-related, psychosocial, and cultural needs.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Manager, Supervisor, or Lead.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
• One year of hospital registration or relevant experience.
• Knowledge of medical insurances (Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMOs, PPOs, commercial), EMTALA, and HIPAA regulations.
• Basic computer skills (word processing, email, and internet).
• Bilingual competency in Spanish or Tagalog preferred.

Pay

Approximate pay range: $29.63 - $35.37 per hour.

Schedule

Full-time (1.0 FTE) NOC shift with every other weekend required.
