Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
About the role
The ASPCA’s Community Medicine (CM) team provides expert veterinary care to support the welfare of animals and their people through stationary and mobile veterinary clinics in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. We help pet owners overcome barriers to care by bringing quality services directly to underserved communities and partially or fully subsidizing the cost of basic and preventive care. As the Licensed Veterinary Technician Staff and Floor Manager at the Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC), you’ll support high-quality/high-volume spay-neuter surgery (HQHVSN) and primary pet care (PPC) for cats and dogs in ASPCA service areas and animals in the care of the rescue community.
You’ll direct workflow on the clinic floor, assist veterinarians with medical treatments, and communicate with clients. Working closely with the CVC management team, you’ll coordinate daily operations to deliver high-quality care and optimize impact for animals in the communities we serve.
Responsibilities
- Medical/Floor Management
- Perform veterinary technician functions, including venipuncture, anesthesia monitoring, surgical preparation and assistance, diagnostics, pharmacy, and patient recovery.
- Support HQHVSN and PPC for cats and dogs alongside veterinarians, technicians, and assistants.
- Use low-stress, gentle animal handling techniques to ensure safety and compassion for animals, staff, and clients.
- Communicate effectively with clients using a kind, nonjudgmental approach during intake, history-taking, and discharge.
- Floor Management
- Oversee workflow on the clinic floor to optimize patient care and staff efficiency.
- Maintain a visible presence in the clinic to provide support, adjust workflows, and foster commitment to ASPCA’s mission.
- Ensure adherence to CM’s standard operating procedures and high-quality patient care.
- Coach staff on gentle, low-stress animal handling and client communication.
- Monitor compliance with DEA regulations and CM protocols for controlled drugs; maintain accurate drug logs.
- Ensure staff take mandatory rest and meal breaks and adhere to time and attendance guidelines.
- Training
- Train and onboard new nursing team members, including hands-on skills and weekly online modules.
- Monitor trainees’ progress, provide developmental feedback, and assist with training interns, residents, and students.
- People Management & Operations
- Serve on the CVC Leadership Team to support a culture of kindness, respect, and teamwork.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, provide coaching, and evaluate performance.
- Lead safety and security initiatives; report and address safety incidents.
- Assist with hiring, scheduling, and managing team time and attendance.
- Facilitate daily huddles and meet regularly with the CVC management team to provide feedback and solutions.
Requirements
- Graduated from an accredited school of veterinary science technology (2- or 4-year program) or equivalent as determined by the New York State Education Department.
- Current New York State Veterinary Technician License.
- Minimum five years of experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician in small animal medicine and surgery; shelter medicine or HQHVSN experience strongly preferred.
- Minimum two years of people management experience.
- Ability to lift and carry 40+ pounds repeatedly throughout the day with assistance.
- Ability to work standing for 8+ hours.
- Fear Free® Shelter certification required within 60 days of hire.
- Strong interest in animal welfare and serving underserved communities.

Pay
The target hiring range for this role is $44.24 - $46.64 per hour. Starting pay depends on education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, and market demands. The maximum hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience.
Schedule
Typically Monday – Friday, 8-hour schedule with occasional flexibility required beyond scheduled workdays. This is an on-site position at the Community Veterinary Clinic in New York.
