The Veterinary Technician position at Petco is dedicated to providing excellent veterinary care and exceptional customer service. This role is integral to the mission and values of Petco, which aims to improve lives by supporting pets and pet parents.

  • Provide excellent veterinary care to patients and exceptional customer care to their owners.
  • Represent Petco's mission and values to all clients and partners.
  • Set the tone for the technical and customer support team in the hospital.
  • Ensure the patient's needs always come first.
  • Deal with and resolve contentious issues as they occur or as soon as possible.
  • Foster exceptional teamwork and commitment to shared goals.

Essential Job Functions

  • Greet clients and patients, obtain weight and vital signs, record in the electronic medical record, and document the patient visit.
  • Aid veterinarians with appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasias, under direct supervision.
  • Perform patient restraint, collect and process laboratory samples, administer medications, and maintain the electronic medical record.
  • Schedule appointments, communicate with clients, relay test results, update inventory, and manage accounts receivable.
  • Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, monitor anesthesia, recovery, and discharge.
  • Provide in-hospital treatments, ensure patient cleanliness, hydration, and feeding, and safely walk canine patients for elimination.
  • Participate in the training of new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required.
  • Keep the hospital environment neat and clean, perform regular cleaning based on necessity and schedule.

Nature of Supervision

  • Take direct supervision from veterinarians and Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty.
  • Take direction from the Hospital Office Manager for overall supervision.

Planning and Problem Solving

  • Contribute to the growth of a productive practice while maintaining a high-quality standard of care.
  • Create an optimal environment for employee retention, patient well-being, and customer satisfaction.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • No immediate supervisory duties.

Education/Experience

  • College or college-equivalent education (completed) as required for becoming a Credentialed Veterinary Technician in the state where the hospital is located.
  • At least 1-year previous experience as a Veterinary Technician or working in a veterinary practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Career-oriented and able to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
  • Telephone and computer skills.
  • Team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change.

Work Environment

  • Majority of job duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care full-service hospital.
  • Requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods.
  • A large portion of the partner's time will be spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.

Contact

  • Regularly communicates with clients, veterinary specialists, and companies providing products and/or services used by the practice.
